Hosting for Duke sites (especially mods and TCs)  "Just like Dukeworld back in the day!"

Hey guys, we've decided to go ahead with our plan to offer hosted sites here on Duke4. This is a step towards having another sort of Duke megacenter as Dukeworld was back in the late 90s. What we're going to do now is start accepting applications for hosting, and as soon as we get 10 or so that we want to go through with I'll set everything up and you guys can start hosting your content here instead of having to find your own hosting somewhere else.

As for the hosting capabilities:
  • No bandwidth limits
  • No real disk space limits (though if you start taking up enough that I actually notice it, expect me to be looking)
  • Offers the latest versions of Apache, PHP, MySQL, et cetera
  • FTP access
  • Everything will be personally managed by me on service graciously donated by Plagman
  • Free to all sites pertaining to Duke or Build

Applications for hosting as well as questions and comments will be taken in this thread. Please don't apply unless you're going to have at least some sort of a site ready to go by the time we get 10 applications. People who are currently on PlanetDuke or other free hosting are especially encouraged to apply, because, well, our hosting is going to be better. :P

Nice! Anything that resembles the once-great Dukeworld will be sweeeet.

Would a website for my SC-55 music packs be unnecessary? I know the HRP website sort of hosts it already, but maybe it could be a central Duke music hub for any music packs people would want to make. Or remixes, even. That could take up a lot of space, though.

If I move my Duke Plus page here, then people would have to update their links. I guess they could be redirected from the current page hosted on Usurper's server. Other than that, I'm all for it.

Yeah, links will have to be updated, which is unfortunate, but I'd really like to see a bunch of Duke stuff all in one place like the old days. I'm actually a little bummed that more people haven't replied to this topic. Is the idea too ambitious or something?

Here is a reply :P

After reading about this, I've decided that I want to move my website to here.
This includes YANG and the other stuff.
It'll probably be better (regarding where it's hosted) than what's offered in sitesled.com ;P

If I had a site I'd definitely move it here. Starting a Duke site is an idea I've contemplated a few times because of all the stuff I've accumulated over the years. It'd basically be a huge collection of resources and user made files all in one spot (just picture msdn, dnr, rtcm, eddy's tc site all rolled up into a neat package, and them add some more stuff). But alas, I have nothing, have never ran a site, and you have no time to deal with amateurs.

I was going to bother Yatta to give me some webspace once my mod was closer to completion.

Just as long as it doesn't resemble Dukeworld's current iteration.

Duke4.net is not going anywhere. Ten years from now--that's May 22, 2019--you'll come to this domain and see the website as it is in its entirety, or even in better shape, even if I'm not in a state to be running it myself.

Invest in this website by letting us host your Duke websites, and we won't let you down. This community is going to remain strong and will not die out, and this website will not stand for anything less than that. This is one project that I firmly intend to keep alive during my lifetime, and a project which I consider to be my legacy. My legacy is NOT going into the hands of a domain squatter or any sell out, because I would literally take it as an insult to my character. This website is also the legacy of several other people who worked VERY HARD to get it to be where it is today, and those individuals share my mindset religiously.

With Duke4.net hosting, you are safe.

I guess I can move here as a test run, I was going to wait for others to do it first. I already have a lot of space and a domain of my own.

So, Itle be something like WG.Duke4.net ?

Yeah, you could have something like wg.duke4.net. Or you guys can have individual hosted sites for different mods and projects. I dunno if the interest is going to be what it needs to be to bother waiting for 10 sites before setting these up so I think I'm going to get rid of that requirement.

Are you going to wait for 10 applicants before starting this? IMO you should just start hosting now with the people currently able to move here, more and more people will notice over time and move here also. I may be wrong, but I think you will struggle to get anything close to 10 applicants, Id imagine a lot of people are just comfortable where they are, I'm personally starting to think it would be really cool to move over here and be a part of something bigger with the community. But what you really need is someone like Mikko to move MSDN over, I could be wrong, but after 10 years of MSDN in its current state, I'm not sure he would be too eager to change?

Yeah, I'm dropping the 10 sites requirement. I think Yatta added wg.duke4.net already, send me an IM and I'll set up the actual hosting for it.

Can hosted sites get their own little sub forum here? You know, for news messages about their sites and people having the opportunity to post feedback and such.

Yeah, if they start a single thread about it and it doesn't end up being enough stuff like subforums will be considered.

Could I have hendricks266.duke4.net? My hendricks266.duke4.org is working OK, but I would rather have the ability to use on-site file hosting, rather than link everything.

Oh yeah, I totally wanted to talk to you about that.

At the time you requested hosting, we had an inflexible nameserver for Duke4.net so it wasn't possible to let our hosted sites use that domain as much as we'd have liked. But that was a while ago!

Things have obviously changed and you can expect that we'll switch you to the new server so you'll have less restrictions in terms of backend software and FTP usage. Along with that, you shall get your brand new domain on Duke4.net once TX sees this. You'll also get a new FTP account to upload your stuff! :)
