Is Deadpool the New Duke Nukem?  "Hope this won't upset anybody just by asking this."

#1

Hope this won't upset anybody just by asking this, I'm just as big of a Duke fan as anybody else here. But I genuinely want to hear your thoughts on this thought I've always had: Is Deadpool (Wade Wilson/Merc with the Mouth/The Hung Regenerator) basically a modern day Duke Nukem?

I mean he's got witty one-liners and phrases, he's got guns and bullets and bombs up the wah-zoo, and he's all about the ladies (only difference between him and Duke is that Wade likes some dudes too).

What do you fellas think? Agreeable? Or about the dumbest thing you've ever heard??

Interesting proposition. Deadpool is arguably more "misogynistic" than Duke.

I thought Duke wasn't some crazy motherfucker with comicbook awareness, schizophrenia and who was also killing just for fun, sometimes by the most violent possible way?

Don't know what you mean by "new" and "modern day", as Deadpool predates Duke Nukem by a couple of months (February vs July 1991).

Let's be serious: Do you really think Duke Nukem would act like this?

Hmm no, Deadpool is Deadpool and has always been.

He's arguably "worse", though, which makes it all the more strange why he's really popular and Duke Nukem is currently mostly abhorred.

Personally, I love both, but I think they're two very different characters. Sure they're both badasses who say cool things, like big guns and women, but Deadpool is played 100% for comedy, whereas Duke is just supposed to be an action hero who says tongue-in-cheek things. He's not supposed to be a comedy character. In my opinion they're not the same, but I think the popularity of Deadpool in this generation opens the door for Duke to make a comeback, and not be as berated for his characteristics.

Aesthetically, but the character that really took off with the more cartoony fun vibe in 97 doesn't have much in common with Deathstroke, beneath the surface level. Though I found the early days of Deadpool's popular solo run to have a lot in common with Lobo in tone, with the splatter humor and whatnot. Though he does owe Deathstroke no doubt, overall he's different enough to be worthwhile, and goes for different things.
