John Romero announces Daikatana 2

I don't remember ever reading this thread so I was surprised when I saw I had made posts in this.

Memory be cray

The two best things the patch does is make the sidekicks invincible and gets rid of the loading bar sound effect (essentially what would happen is the loading screen bar would fill up with ticks and whenever a tick came on screen it played a sound effect. It wouldn't do the next tick until the sound effect fully played out either, so you had to hear the sound effect in full for EVERY. SINGLE. TICK. It basically made every single load screen 20+ seconds long. Deleting the sound file makes loading instant)

That. ticking. sound. drove. me. nuts. I never knew you could just delete the relevant sound file.

The Norse (I love the frosty, dark art direction) and Greece levels were really cool, and without having to babysit the companions the game's generally a decent experience. It's in no way one of the worst shooters ever made, but given the pedigree of the lead and the hubris surrounding the studio, I'm not surprised it failed to find an audience at launch. Divorcing yourself from the expectations of a pure Doom or Quake-style fps is a big help.

Yeah the second and third episode were pretty good. A couple levels in them really drag but the atmosphere and level design is still pretty good.
The first and fourth episode though are pretty weak.

Any news on Fresch's Daikatana remake?

There is an unofficial 1.3 patch for Daikatana that fixes a lot of issues, bugs and AI behaviour with the game(including the ticking sound loading). It also provides an option for removing the companions during gameplay and only having them for cutscenes. With this, one can play it like a doom/quake style fps.
