Daily Dnf Rant Thread Part 2  "Rants about DNF and its development go here."

#151

I hate to be the cynic, but a part of me doubts there will be a new Duke game. At least not on the scale we all want. I get that DNF turned out to be profitable, but not enough to guarantee a big budget sequel or reboot by today's standards. I hope I'm wrong and that Randy has the guts to be very creative and make Duke cool again. Gearbox does have talent, they just seem to be selective on how they use it. Who knows, maybe development is further along than we think.

Gearbox knows where they went wrong in terms of gameplay with DNF, so they should definitely be able to make a game that's better (I mean come on, who couldn't?), but then again they also the franchise's reputation has been damaged by DNF and that people won't so readily buy the next game. At first this seems bad, but when you think about it, it could mean that Gearbox has no choice but to make DNF really good to really win the public back.

I guess we'll wait and see. But I'd be surprised if they never make a new Duke game.

Compare the fan base for Duke Nukem Vs Shadow Warrior fan base. Shadow Warrior got a reboot. So why not Duke.

That was not a reboot by any stretch. It was a miserable game on life support.

Maybe it came out late, but technicallly its a sequel.

The game wasn't a re-imagening, or a new attemp at the franchise, it was Duke 4.

If they make another on now it could be considered a reboot if for instance they change it up quite a bit. Or of course start him up at a beginning.

It was a sequel in 1998 and 2001 iterations, but ended up being almost a reimagening featuring same enemies and same weapons.

(**Fixed to fit my view... Hehehehe)

I got my PS3 so I could play Duke Nukem Forever... not a modern gamer. I play a lot of older games. Just last year I got this old game people talk about some of you might have heard of called Halo and Halo 2. I FINALLY decided to see what all the chatter was about in this modern (relative to my gaming habit/timeline) shooter. I have enjoyed it ok.

So what is my point? I play a LOT of older games... like back to Atari etc weekly. When I played Duke Nukem Forever for the first time, I turned off as much of the "Wasted countless hours of my life in the Textual Prison of Anticipation" 3D Realms Forums, and played it... from that perspective, it feels like "an ok shooter" staring some non-gamers interpretation of the Duke Nukem Character. An ok game for 2001 to 2003 maybe. Is that what I wanted or expected? No. Most importantly, that is not at ALL what I was lead to believe would be delivered. If it was from eBay I would return it for a full refund of my wasted time, original purchase price, return shipping and most of all, compensation for being mislead.

Again I point out there is a huge difference between Confidence and Arrogance. "When It's Done" could only be seen as Arrogance at this point... had they delivered the game we were lead to believe they could and were, it would appear as confidence, even if it did take many years.

This leads me to believe that the success of Duke Nukem 3D might have been less calculated and more accidental maybe. Maybe Duke 3D was at the creative capacity of everyone involved and making an equally epic follow up was never possible to begin with. I have seen this happen with programmers/scripters, including myself, to some extent.
Besides, with games, it looks like to me that you could use Video Resolution as a multiplier for the number of team members needed to develop a game these days. The old days of one man bands of video games had passed a decade ago, until the advent of iphones and Android. (e.g. Kens Labyrinth, by Ken Silverman and Nightmare 3D, by David Gray)

But I have to admit, I have a strong sense of "Still Waiting" for a real Duke Nukem game... so I still find myself here sometimes. Another 13 years anyone? :(

Yeah I doubt they expected Duke 3D to do as well as it did. Much like Shadow Warrior did much worse than they expected, even though they made it as much like Duke 3D as possible given how late it was in development.

DNF is technically a reboot when you think about just how many core gameplay aspects they changed. Show me another sequel to a game (where both games are in the same genre) where so many core gameplay aspects are changed so dramatically.

It was not a reimagining. It had a different plot, setting, and side characters. A reimagining would be in essence taking everything of the original game and transforming it fundamentally, not just copy and pasting things over a different engine. A re-imagining would be something like BSG.

They knew enough that they had a hit of a game on their hands from play testing, and their own common sense. The problem was the attitude behind development. 3DR stopped trying to do cool new things, and started copying what other people were doing. This is evident from 2003 going forward from what we can see. They started copying Doom 3, bits of Fear, Far Cry, Half-Life 2, Halo. They hacked out the bits they thought were revolutionary and put them together. Also, the bulk of the core talent behind Duke3D was all gone by the time Duke Forever was into it's fourth year of development.

Show me another game that had as long and protracted a development as DNF. It's not a reboot, remake, or reimagining. It's a sequel that acknowledges the previous game. The plot explicitly makes references to Duke 3D. Duke Nukem : Reloaded, would have been defined as a reimagining.

Duke Nukem 3d was a fluke.

I remember one statement that made me think this might possibly NOT be the case... John St. John (sp?) stated that when voicing for Duke Nukem 3D he was required to say all of his lines through his teeth or something like that. To me, this was part of what made the Duke 3D character seem "consistent" in a way. Did George want it that way for complex reasons? I think it is possible. Then weigh this against the content of the lines in Duke Nukem 3D... pretty darn consistent as well. I remember playing one of the WizardWorks add-ons and thinking how "pushing the limits" a couple of the lines were... but most were "in line" with what made Duke "seem like Duke" to me. Even in other Duke games like Time to Kill, the character was never quite "compromised" by his lines and how they were spoken. But in Duke Nukem Forever... was too far out for me.

Of course this is just focusing on the Duke 3D era lines/voices without even considering gameplay. So aside from gameplay, the point is that I feel the "New Duke" is why the game just didn't work for me.
