Is It Time To Spank Gearbox?
#1 Posted 28 December 2013 - 05:41 PM
I believe if the Duke community comes together and shows Gearbox how we deserve these tools, things will get done a lot faster. If we continue to "wait it out" we will never see any modding or older builds in our lifetime. I believe if we put our heads together and protest Gearbox in the best way possible, we can get something going here. There is no reason why we do not have mod tools yet, there is even no reason why we can not have a look at older builds when we have waited 14 years for a rip off.
If anyone has any other ideas how to create a reaction from gearbox, I'm all ears!

The Duke community or people who care enough to protest about the grievances you mentioned aren't even a drop in the bucket of their market. They wouldn't notice or care about a protest or boycott by such a small number of people.

Hm, I guess we could send the "spec ops" (as Kathy put it) and spam those forums you suggested to bits, but that's what we do here and this place has become one of the coolest forums...
And DDoSing the main site? That's something that could be done solo. Why don't you do it, if you're so keen?

Seriously man, if we need to show them that we have the POWER, then maybe we actually don't have as much POWER as you think? The truth is, they can do whatever they want, and we can't do anything about it. Boo-hoo.

He actually started talking to me about this in private and I agree with him, except the DDOS'ing part. I think the fans could push them to do it, but I do agree that the numbers aren't there. I think there's more than plenty of fans out there, but not enough of them who are engaged enough. Even if they never do it, we have Interceptor's rumored Duke game to look forward to. Regardless of the quality of it, there's no doubt they will release mod tools for it. I'm sure whatever they come up with will feel more like a Duke game than DNF.
Still, I don't think there was enough of an uproar over them not releasing the tools like there should've been.

DNF is so bad that it would be a horrible modding environment. It runs a souped up, bastardized old version of Unreal Engine with poor technical performance and excessive load times. A level editor I'll grant you but not much more.
I can't think of the last time DNF mod tools crossed my mind, let alone came up in discussion.
Who still cares about this? You? NUKEMDAVE?
You should have started a poll.

2. The engine is pretty poor for working in anyway. Even eduke32 would be better since you can build pretty quickly in it and you can make something that looks decently modern with the right resources.
3. We might as well just wait for the next duke game, which will probably be a lot better and have better mod tools, and continue modding eduke in the meantime.
4. Don't forget Gearbox was SO AGAINST modding the game that they took out not only the console, but later the developer console as well. So they actually put time and effort into abolishing modding.
Yes Gearbox (especially the management) are dicks, but there's nothing we can do about it for all the reasons mentioned in this thread.

Just like the fans were ineffective with Microsoft regarding Xbox One DRM? Yeah, that's a lot bigger, but I think there's enough Duke fans out there who could get something started if they really wanted to. The Duke Nukem page on Facebook has 400,000 likes, so there's enough interest out there to get some attention if those people could be reached. I know most of you don't like Randy Pitchford. Why not set a date and bombard him on Twitter about it? In a respectful way, of course. Even if it didn't do any good, I know you guys would get a kick out of it.

That's definitely why they didn't want to release the tools. They didn't want people improving it and making them look bad. I would say them not releasing the older builds is for a similar reason, too. I'm sure there's things here and there in the older builds that would make the final product look lacking. The fact that it's been a few years is probably a good thing. Now would probably be a good time to bring this up to them. I'm pretty sure people would be interested in modding it still.
Also, if this new Interceptor game really is a Duke game and they end up releasing tools for it, that's going to look even worse on Gearbox's part. They'd be better off to release the DNF tools before this takes place.

DNF was an OK game and I don't regret to have payed for the game. I wrote this before; I am actually glad that Gearbox never issued an editor. By now I would have wasted two years on a mod, without any cash in sight.
So you still want mod tools? Right here the Level Editor Superior and use this to rearrange all the DNF assets. Write to Gearbox and ask for permission to use the Duke character, chances are nil to get permission. So your mod will be a top secret endeavor.

Everyone who bought Duke Nukem Forever and the recent Duke re-releases. C'mon, enough of this Duke-is-irrelevant stuff. Whenever there's an off James Bond film, they just keep going and make a better one. I just hope it's the same way here.
I just think it's weird Gearbox doesn't ever mention Duke. Not even a Christmas Duke tweet. There is no fan outreach, no assurance that Duke is alive and still out there. They don't have to announce a new Duke game yet, but at least show they care about their products. They'll talk about Borderlands 2 over a year but nothing else. All this silence drums up the same amount of hype that announcing something would.

True if your talking about DNF, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who want another awesome Duke game and plenty of them won't post on forums either. Duke 3D is still universally revered, thankfully that's not likely to change.
As for wanting mod tools, forget about it, I'm pretty sure Shovelware wants everyone to forget about DNF so why would they want to bring back memories of it again by releasing mod tools to people who probably wont even use them other than to add more tits and poop?

By 3DRealms, not by Gearbox. And 3DRealms had already decided not to release mod tools even before selling the IP to Gearbox, so, if you really want to bark up a tree, be sure to choose the correct one.
Do you really want an UnrealEd-style editor and Duke Nukem-style weapons? Then I suggest you to:
1) go buy Unreal Gold
2) update it to the latest version of OldUnreal
3) install the Unreal4Ever weapon pack (yes, it's actually called that), by decompressing it with this utility
Will you still complain that it's not the real thing? Then I suggest you to:
1) STFU
2) GTFO

Or maybe they want to avoid the absolutely DISASTROUS self-feeding hype cycle that happened with DNF, and which would inevitably happen again with any other new Duke game, should they decide to talk about it before it goes gold. In which case they are wiser than 3DRealms.
A decade or so ago, during a particularly nasty flame war in the 3DRealms forum, I had PM'd Joe, telling him that if they really believed the "Area 51 rules" they preached and they really wanted to prevent flame wars, they should have erased the DNF section from the forum and banned whoever talked about it. Joe's reply was approximately "Do you have any idea of the hell we would go through if we did that?"
History showed that they went through a much worse hell by not doing that.

Well of course they did that: everyone was aware of the situation, and staying silent at that point in time would have done absolutely nothing against the hype monster that had existed since 1997.
And even so, they were still less shameless than Joe Siegler, who lied in the 3DRealms forum in 2010, denying that Gearbox had bought the Duke Nukem IP and going as far as erasing a thread where the rumor was discussed, with the excuse that it was "bullshit".
But of course, Joe was not new at that kind of game. He already played it in 2002, when the rumor had come out that Human Head was reviving Prey. Joe's response was to say that "it was completely false" and lock the thread.

True. I read somewhere that Gearbox is selling the Duke Franchise. Of course, a rumour but Randy is frustrated by the fact that he has a franchise he has no idea how to handle.
Anyway, Interceptor is working on something. Scott Miller and Jon st John are involved. I hope it is Duke Nukem, mostly because Fred has some ideas that are fresh and new. Hopefully they will somehow work with Triptych or just Allen Blum. If it will be an AAA-game I have no idea. But they full-time employees and just got a 1million $ loan from their state. That is twice the money if not more, than their average game RotT costed. Rise of the Triad at release state was Beta for me. After 1.2 it is fine, but it took god damn long. It costed me 10$ as I bought a four-pack. Let's see if they can make something better. Let's hope so!
Also, I don't really think Gearbox would care about ''us''. It's not like we're the only people who likes Duke Nukem.
