Turning a picture in to tileart

#1

So, this is my first post on here. Last time I did any kind of level editing or art or anything was in the late 90s on a Windows 98 PC with dos so getting used to these new programs is... challenging.

So, what Id like to do is take a photo of a stack of crushed cars and turn in into wallpaper for the game. I don't like the idea of a street being blocked off by a concrete wall. I think itd be fitting to have a wall of crushed cars ala Escape from New York.

I saw a tutorial on how to export tileart from the grp file and I downloaded GIMP and DukeRes, but the tutorial isn't the greatest.

Can anybody kinda walk me through how to take a jpg and turn it into itleart?

Here is an old tut, I did for SW. Same principles apply for Duke 3D.

Any questions: just post them, and the current artists should be able to help you.

If you're modding for EDuke32 you don't actually have to convert them to .ART files. You can just define them with the tilefromtexture command.

If you're going to do it in the traditional Duke palette and add art to the tile files, I use BAFed editor. Easy and simple to use. When you import art it will automatically convert the colors to Duke palette colors (not always pleasant colors so you may have to tweak them by exporting the converted art and editing the colors again and reimport). If you're trying to put in art with empty space around it, save as .png.

Ok, Ill check it out. Basically, I was able to do everything except when I try to import the image back in to DukeRes, it says that's its not in the proper palette, so I guess I need to figure out how to take this image and convert it to the proper palette.

Since I already have GIMP, does anybody know how to do that on GIMP?

DukeRes is garbage. I'm still a proponent of EDITART, but honestly tilefromtexture is the way to go.

I would recommend ImageAnalyzer by Michael Vinther for converting images to a palette. Its better than GIMP or even Photoshop for that.

Hank, thanks so much. This helped out a lot.

Now, I just have to refamiliarize myself with all the BUILD (or master commands), that is. Its been about 20 years since Ive made a level.
