I wouldn't be surprised if the game is on Unity engine.

Unreal Engine 4 and can be scaled back quite well to run on lower hardware

I almost missed it, but Amid Evil has finally come out of Early Access and now has all seven episodes unlocked. It's also 20% off on Steam and GOG right now.
NOW GO... and buy (if you haven't already)! 98% positive Steam reviews can't be wrong.

I liked heretic, so I'd probably like this one.

I'll probably get it some day.

Yeah, I got it to run better, but it doesn't look so nice now. Ah well, I'm not saying the game's shit or anything. Just a heads up in case anyone figured it'd have the same requirements as Dusk.

Since when do people who still use computers with WinXP have the money to buy games?

You would be very surprised, but there are a lot of people who do, most of them are in third world countries though. Usually they also don't buy anything else (music, movies, etc) and they don't bother with too pricey games.

^Ugh. That's why I don't feel like I really like this "retro shooter" thing. Games like Dusk, Hedon and this one took the whole idea of "pixelated graphics" to the extreme! No color direction et all, just a garbage mash-up of all what your pallete have.
The old DOS games was not THAT ugly! Even Shaw's Nightmare looks prettier than this (not to mention my own game, hehe). The only modern retro FPS game I enjoyed so far is Ion Maiden.

Very true, also the community full of fanboys who think their game is more than perfect. I'm so done with them.
When i read "Dusk" is the new real Quake or Amid Evil is the new "Heretic/Hexen 3" game when there is no reason to do a comparaison, specially with a new game who is inferior in design and level design. And that's disrespecful for the old games who are still modded with a lot of mappers and all who put a lot of passion in it.

People who say this is like Heretic 3 or the new Heretic/Hexen are so cancer
Spoiler

Same for Quake when they say DUSK has better designs, seriously?
Spoiler

DUSK and Amid Evil are maybe fun because of fast pewpew shooting but a classic fps are not only about that, people have no idea what they are talking about when they compare it with other fps.
The only one who looks good in retro style, level design, gameplay and design are Ion Maiden and Wrath for what i saw. Project Warlock is a pretty cool Dungeon fps wolfenstein 3D like with a lot of rpg elements and possibilities for a horizontal fps and DUSK fans compared Warlock to their loved DUSK like if Project Warlock sucked because there was no vertical gameplay (actually a little).

Also this community can't handle any criticism, push fanboys against reviewers who put a negative review and ask to other people to put positive review like forcing, pro'.

About asking for positive reviews:
https://steamcommuni...36225021982506/

About a comment of the developper who did a self burning comment to show off in a mod of Heretic:

"BETTER THAN AMID EVIL"
like said a friend in the comments: "Best unironical comment ever."

Asking to people to bash guy because he posted a negative review, to force him to change.

New generation of fans of classic fps is scaring'

How exactly are those two games inferior to their inspirations?

I have not played Amid Evil and I have very mixed feelings about DUSK, but as far as the latter goes, I do not think the comparison with Quake is unfair at all.

There's merit to the argument. After playing a lot of Dusk it feels "quaint". It doesn't feel near as polished as something like Quake was. But that's part of Dusk's charm. I don't think it's inferior but it's definitely not similar besides the fact that they're both low-poly and fast-paced. I still prefer Dusk over Quake, but I don't necessarily agree that it's "better" than Quake.

I also love Amid Evil, but I wouldn't say it's better than Heretic or Hexen either. Or maybe you can't really compare them that way. I love all three games but they're quite different from eachother.

What I learned working on Ion Maiden is that making a full-rounded retro game won't be easier than making games back then or some modern games. I suspect there are so many "minimalist" retro games because they are seen as something that requires minimal effort.

It's exactly what bore me, the games are maybe fun and all (and not perfect, nothing is anyway), but saying Amid Evil is the real Heretic 2 (or Heretic 3/Hexen3) is not cool, same with Quake/Dusk.
And actually Heretic II is a very good TPS still played online with a communtiy on fb (raven games) which is cool, Hexen 2 has a lot of quality even if it's more squared level design/medieval atmosphere than dark fantasy but i won't say Hexen 2 is too bad to be replaced by Amid Evil, what the hell

Still waiting for something to come to my favorite series "officially", even if it never happens :>

You were not pleased with Quake Champions?

Yeah, Quake Champions is fun and cool but it's not a nextgen SP game and it's not in my favorites retro fps series.
I could have continued to play Quake Champions but the amount of different maps is TOO small i think, supposed because of "Esport/pro playing" but it's dumb, it's boring for people to play always the same maps over and over, also the server system (like doom 2016) is terrible and 1min for warming up before the fight :') I don't care so much about balance or others, it happens in a lot of games anyway.
I hope more like a nextgen Blood or Heretic by exemple, but yeah, i can dream xD
At least, there is still a ton of awesome mods and fan maps for it.

Considering we don't have hardware limitations problem nowadays it's even more challenging to make actual retro-like games. Even games with sprite graphics in general is quite challenging to make, especially if sprites have a lot of attention to small details which means there is more work to do (and it's a time-consuming work as well), not to mention that good quality animation also requires even more frames. 3D is just more efficient and cheaper to do (especially if we speak of animations), although the downside is that weak hardware wouldn't be able to handle it well, especially if developer cannot optimize the game (lack of hardware limitations is the biggest reason why this problem also exist in my opinion), this means less people would buy such a game.

Also, the funniest part about cheap/zero-efforts hipster indie games is that they usually don't bother making proper lighting either because you need to tweak sprites too to make the lighting more realistic. In fact, lighting seems to their biggest weakness.

Yeah, you see this with Hedon and not just with the sprites, but everything in the game seems to lack adequate lighting, such as wall textures and objects. I think it's because they're not really taking the retro thing seriously like the developers whose games they were influenced by. Their concern is just pulling off a convincing enough retro aesthetic, rather than making good graphics that suspend your disbelief. "Hey guys, remember when games kinda looked like shit?". The difference is they weren't trying to look like shit, lol. They were trying their best and that's simply what was possible at the time.

Edit: To be fair, I think a lot of these indie devs are also trying their best, so lack of skill (and not just laziness) definitely plays a part. I still respect anyone who can deliver a 5-6 hour video game experience by themselves.

I am really curious as to see what the next single-player Quake game would look like. I have always had a preference for Quake II's science-fiction setting, even though I have been fairly disappointed by Quake IV and I did not even bother with Quake Wars. The original Quake was thematically a bit of a mess, as it is clearly the fruit of a long and troubled development cycle, so I wonder if it would be worth it to try to reconcile the two universes by making it so both the Stroggs and whoever the bad guys in the first game are supposed to be are revealed to be working for the same entity.

For once we share entirely the same opinion on all of those points. However, I stopped waiting for a single player Quake game around the same time I stopped expecting another single player Unreal game. I'd much rather the latter, though.

Far to be like the grim atmosphere of Heretic and Hexen. The atmosphere of the maps is bland and doesn't make sens with these big symetrical...temples? and rounded corridors.

Hexen 2 had maybe a few flaws or less original than Hexen for people but at least You had a real atmosphere (not dark fantasy but medieval yeah) and good designs (not just polygon put one on another).
I said that because people started to say Hexen 2 and Heretic 2 was so bad, Amid Evil is the real sequel, like if we had to disown the old games'

It's not that bad. Just very stylized. I like it. That Project Warlock game resembles that more than Amid Evil does.

I still don't believe the comparison to Heretic/Hexen is really fair at all besides the similarities in weapons.

Without playing Amid Evil, just watching videos, I get the sense that the game is severely lacking Unreal Tournament style dodging. It just seems the gameplay is so focused on maneuvering around enemy projectiles, that it is almost like a missing feature.

Doesnt the enemy of DUSK or Amid Evil go straight on your direction? or do they try some fake dodge at least? (like Imp from doom) I saw some videos of these games, but dont remember very well about it.

I HATED that feature. Always got in the way and I was dodging when I didn't want to. I always turned it off.

Hmm, I never dodged accidentally in almost 20 years playing UT and it's successors.

You shouldn't increase the key press time for dodging to 3 seconds. :D

Yeah, having the option is fine. I just self-centeredly assumed that it was as annoying to everyone else as it was to me lol.

I've never played UT. Is it one of those dashes that get activated when you double-tap the movement keys?
