Gearbox at PAX East 2019

Today, Gearbox had an hour-long presentation at PAX East 2019, during which Borderlands 3 was formally revealed. The developer trailer was just released, with a message to check back for updates on April 3.

This wasn't the only thing Gearbox did today. They revealed a Borderlands tabletop game, a 4K remaster of the previous titles, and showed previews of same games they've partnered with to publish, including Trover Saves The Universe, a game from Squanch Games, a studio founded by Rick and Morty creator and star Justin Roiland.

Sadly, except for a brief mention about Bulletstorm, there was nothing Duke related in the presentation.

Also, it appears that Randy seems to have weathered the storm of allegations against him fairly well, as he was received warmly.

The Borderlands 1 remaster with all DLCs included is coming out ON April 3rd, so that's cool. I'll be playing that for sure. They will have more info about Borderlands 3 on April 3rd and probably a release date for 4th quarter '19.

I think it's more accurate to say that serious gamers never gave a shit about it in the first place. So he may or may not have had a breach of contract with a sleazy lawyer, and he once misplaced a USB drive with a webcam girl video on it. I mean who gives a fuck, we are here for games. The gamergate fake journalists can talk about that all they want, and the rest of us can ignore them.

Let's face it: This "porngate" incident was just a reason for all the Randy/Gearbox haters to crawl out of their holes again. Personally I don't approve what Gearbox is doing with the Duke franchise, but that's no reason to wish for Randy's dick falling off or something.

My, how jealous I am of Borderlands fans. Always get what they want. That said, I do need to try Borderlands 2. I didn't get into the first one but I hear the second is better. Plain ignorance behind the handling of Duke Nukem. They're even resulting to using Duke to sell Bulletstorm on Switch by changing the secondary title to name to "Duke of Switch," whatever that means. I hope another ambulance comes along and saves Duke again.

I don't know why you're frustrated about Randy not doing shit with the Duke IP, they just announced this:

The franchise is officially saved now. Duke of Switch Edition, what a cool title, I'm sure nobody is going to shout "FUCK YOU, RANDY!" at the screen after seeing this.

Good to see owners of the original Borderlands will get the update for free, although I have to wonder just how much of a difference it will make.

As for Borderlands 3, I wonder if they will bring back The Pre-Sequel's Body Slam, as I quite enjoyed that game mechanic. Not sure how I feel about the new Vault Hunters, though; I think it is going to be really hard to top Borderlands 2's Krieg from a gameplay perspective and The Pre-Sequel's vanilla protagonists from a narrative perspective.

I want a Borderlands game that combines BL1, BL2 and TPS into a single, streamlined experience. And while we are at it, I would not say no to Battleborn's campaign getting salvaged and reworked into the Borderlands game that it should have been in the first place instead of that weird hodgepodge of ideas that ended up appealing to no one. But of course, that is never going to happen...

Shoot. I can't help but get excited about stuff coming to the Switch. I'm gonna have to get the game there now. Normally I'd get an FPS on the PC first and foremost, but this one seemed like a console shooter from the get-go anyway. Plus you can't jump. And I need more Switch games. I'm just so excited that the Switch, a Nintendo platform, is getting AAA attention like Nintendo used to!

That was for low gravity/vacuum environments so I doubt they will bring it back. I thought it was fun at first but ultimately it makes the gameplay too silly and detracts from the gunplay too much. Between the butt slams and the abilities that recharge pretty quickly you could get through the whole game while hardly shooting.

I'll keep an open mind about the vault hunters, there have been leaks about some of their powers but we really don't know how they will play at this point. Also keep in mind that Krieg was a DLC character, and just as in BL2 there are probably going to be two DLC characters added later on.

Just as BL2 was better than BL1 in every way, I want BL3 to be better than BL2 in every way. But the main area I want to see huge improvement in is guns. The Borderlands series is no longer the king when it comes to weapon diversity (Destiny, for example, beats it now), and Borderlands was never all that great on the intangibles that make guns satisfying to use. I want to see something revolutionary, like an AI that can generate infinitely many new guns, and they are all well-designed...not gonna happen for BL3, that's what I want.

What you're describing is something not unlike Shadow Warrior 2, where they had all kinds of slightly modified gun stats and things. Wasn't all that great a system though. As you say, having them all be well-designed is very, very difficult.

No, that is not what I am describing. Most looter games have random drops with "slightly modified stats and things" -- SW2 added nothing original to that idea and implemented it badly. Good games like Borderlands 2 and Destiny 2 have lots fun and genuinely different weapon designs, they are not just stat sticks with random shit on them. What I was saying is that I would like to see an AI system that could generate real new and unique weapons on the fly that are well-designed.

Well, obviously, I disagree here: butt-slamming frozen enemies never got old and I got so used to it that I would oftentimes find myself reflexively trying to do in Destiny 2.

That is why I wish - though again I am really not holding my breath - that the entire Borderlands series could be remade into one giant game, so I could butt-slam slagged frozen enemies with Krieg!

With the exception of the robot-head guy, they look kind of generic to me, which was an issue I had with the BL1 and BL2 roster (except of course Krieg, because holy shit, that Action Skill); you can argue that the TPS characters were too, but at least, they had the excuse of being already established characters - with the exception of Aurelia. Speaking of which, I wish they had made Mr. Blake into a playable character instead, or maybe a custom Hyperion robot remotely controlled by Angel pretending to be an AI like in the beginning of Borderlands 2. As much as I appreciate Gearbox bringing gender parity to the game's roster, I could never bring myself to care about her - so she is Sir Hammerlock's sister that he never mentioned before, big deal - and, much like the Borderlands 2 playable characters, she did not really have much of a reason to get involved in the game's events. Heck, I cannot even remember off the top of my head what her powers and Action Skill were aside from being ice-themed.

I do not know, I played Destiny 2 and I really was not impressed with the guns. Granted, I never bothered with The Forsaken expansion, but still, I must have spent so many hours playing the base game and yet I am hard-pressed to remember a single weapon (besides its type, of course) without having to look it up.

I can't believe that they are sitting on one of the greatest, most revered gaming IP's of all time and this is the best we get.

I guess this forum is a place for "snowflakes" after all...

But seriously, do not be all so quick to discount the possibility that Gearbox may very well be currently working on an actual Duke Nukem game but have nothing to announce yet or just do not want to make the same mistakes as 3D Realms did with Duke Nukem Forever. That and with the unmitigated disaster that was Battleborn, they might understandably want to play it safe with Borderlands 3 for now.

Snowflakes?

Randy himself stated in a recent interview that they had approached a few companies, but at that moment, there were no plans for a new Duke game.

There will be something for the 25th annivarsary in 2021.

The IP is next to worthless, though. Gearbox should just sell it to a smaller company who is willing to take risks.

People were saying this for years and for years they were disappointed. Though Randy had a good point about saying that it has to be done right (putting him into other games hardly can be considered doing it right though) and with modern AAA industry it's impossible since making Duke-like FPS means taking risks. But yeah, that's big companies, not small so there are people who can do it right.

All they do with Duke is to keep adding him to other games. I doubt they have anything else in store for him. This company can only do Borderlands and nothing else. The Duke license should go back to 3DR or anyone else who cares and is able to do something useful with it.

I wouldn't mind seeing 3DRealms getting it back but I doubt they will, I would love to see what they can do with Duke IP.

And take the risk that it profits someone else?

Just to be clear, I am being snide here: I fully agree with you, but alas, our very capitalistic video game industry clearly does not… This is why I love the modding community so much, with players/workers owning the means of production. Video game socialism is what we need!

Oh, do not get me wrong: I am absolutely not holding my breath here. But if I were Gearbox and I was working on a Duke Nukem game, I would keep quiet about it for now, as the last time a company hyped one before it was ready for release, it did not end well...

Well, Bombshell was initially planned as a Duke Nukem game and it turned out to be really not that great, so even with 3D Realms, there is just no guarantee, although I suppose Ion Maiden could still have worked as essentially "Duke Nukem 3D 2".

I have an idea. How about putting Duke into Ion Maiden as a DLC? Hell, I would actually buy that right now already. Not that I don't like Shelly, don't get me wrong. But this would be a guest appearance I could actually live with. Duke would finally be in a good game again. And on top, the right people would profit from it.

Does 3D Realms still have the rights to use the Duke Nukem character? The fact that they had to rework Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction into Bombshell to avoid a lawsuit seems to suggest otherwise.

No, they don't, sadly. They had to acquire a license to get him into Rad Rogers, which I'm still surprised succeeded.
