I'm guessing the tones are coming from the generator hum itself and not from the arcs, despite what they're saying? I can't understand how the arcs could be the source of the sound, since their behavior is random.

Nope, it's the electrical discharges modulating the air pressure. They're going by the name of "plasma speakers" (google it). I would absolutely love to hear one of those in action, since they're said to have a very high fidelity due to not requiring moving parts, but sadly they're not terribly practical, generating ozone and other not-so-healthy gases in the presence of air.

Sending different voltage makes different sound pitch.

Like low pitch for low voltage.
High pitch for more voltage.

So they usually plays with voltage for those floppy drives making music.

Still sounds better than the Megadrive version.

Off-topic, but here's a cool 32X cover of Grabbag. Apparently, the advantage to 32X FM synthesis over that on the Mega Drive is a sixth FM channel with 4 percussion channels. So there you are. There is some great work on the Mega Drive soundchip, too. Just a lot of crap.

That sounds okay. The guitars kinda suck, but the synth parts are dead on.
