Bob Averill comes out of retirement long enough to complete an unfinished experimental map

Its either an inside joke between the two of them, or TX doesn't like him.

Ha, I don't expect anyone to get it. The guy is just a piece of shit.

Backstory: many years ago, I happened to be on IRC when my mother phoned to say my grandmother had passed away a few minutes earlier. Beaverton Bob here thought it would be a riot to make fun of it not even 5 minutes after I mentioned it; I still hold a grudge because that's just not the kind of thing anyone with a soul does. It was a few years later I next heard his name again, this time in a news story about how he had been expelled from some art school for harassing a girl daily and how he was throwing some public shitfit about it. I could care less what kind of maps he makes for Duke, Bob Averill can go fuck himself and he can use his holier-than-thou attitude to do it.

Even if he is the next incarnation of Hitler, we should be happy with such new releases of old classics that defined the modern era of Duke 3d. Short after Red 1 remake, this is really a great news and I'm looking forward to play it.

If I started to care about the people behind the creation, I'd probably not read/watch/play/listen to half of the things I do. If I cared about what other people think or say of the creators, then I wouldn't do anything.

Anyway - I didn't like the map so much to be honest. It's respectable in its design, originality of layout, and on paper the concept is great. But when you play it, wandering again and again in a slow manner in a huge dark underwater environment while not being fully sure where to go next is a bit tedious and repetitive.

This being said the map has some positive points, like I said the originality of the layout and theme, the atmosphere, the story is good, and the few underwater fights actually happened to be fun against all expectations!

We shouldn't even play Duke 3D, after they credited Levelord maps to someone else in Atomic Edition.

Bob Averill is your typical fedora-atheist.

I've contacted TerminX and explained myself, he and I are on good terms now.

As for the rest of the comments, it's depressing to be targeted for hatred and ridicule by people I have never met, and certainly never done anything to hurt. But I suppose that's what I get. I burned a lot of bridges when I was younger and will spend the rest of my life rebuilding them.

Welcome ;) And your map is awesome, I'd say not on the level of the first 3 maps but still a wonderful piece. You've inspired many mappers to start building more complex stuff. I remember Gambini sending me your first 2 maps on a floppy disk via postal service and my mind was blown to pieces :D

??
i see only one person making harsh comments at your person, and none at your map (aside from constructive criticism)

your nose runs and your feet smell

now your impression is legitimate. glad to be of service. you owe me one.

You´re a damn liar!! ;)

You sent them my way but the floppy was corrupted (you was the one with internet remember?) so I couldnt get past the first room in Bobsp1 (yet I was amazed already with that room). Old times :D

Oh and glad to know Bob and TX are in good terms!

I recently finished this map and have to say that I'm impressed. It's my favourite Bobsp map: while the others were undoubtely influential, I'm not sure their influence was a good one ;). This one is a lot more how a map should be laid out IMO -- giving you at least the illusion of freedom. Meaning: sure, you have to find the keycards in order, but once you're underwater, you're kind of lost and need to explore it. It's even conceivable to continue on the theme if it wasn't for the wall limit. Say... a submerged city below the ground, reached through passages from the rift...

The visual glitch when looking from one border of the map can be made to go away: just split each of the two overlong walls (light blue in Mapster32) forming an obtuse angle in half. Also, in the prison, Duke can start to behave as if on land when above a blocking wall/floor sprite. This behavior is Duke3D's, so it can't be changed without breaking backwards compatibility. But starting with r4166, it is disabled when the sprites have an xvel of 1. With r4169, all you need is to highlight all sprites in that region and run the new "Xvel=1 for wall/flr spr." entry from the [']+[F] menu (assuming a.m32 is loaded).

Is this in the wiki somewhere? Is there even a page for these small tweaks like this and the unbreakable mirror thing? It'd be a shame for this to slip under the radar.

The wiki is a resource that can be edited by anyone... Currently, I think there's not even a page where such tweaks could be collected.
