Joe Siegler posted this on the GBX forums and I thought everyone here should see it too :)

That really is a beautiful sight to see the Nuke floor logo alive :P but heartbreaking to see it removed from the 3D Realms lobby :(

EDIT: Oh hang on, the article says you could build a new floor, but it confirmed that the floor was lifted, so wouldn't that make it a royal pain to build a new floor?

They didn't build a whole floor itself, but removed tiles and placed in there whatever they were planning to place. On first pics you can see similar process when 3dr was moving in.

The people doing the renovation will have either laid a new floor on top or scraped everything up and just put a new floor in.

Its a crying shame. That was one of the great un-sung icons of old-school gaming.

Mucho kudos to Mr. Black Cat for bringing it back in some form.

It probably sounds stupid and kinda sad, but when I first saw the photos, I thought it would be really cool to visit their offices and walk over that symbol.

I wasn't even aware that they had vacated the place.

At this point 3dRealms are pretty much gone. The only somewhat recognisable property left is Shadow Warrior. But it's no match to Duke Nukem, Max Payne or Prey.

Shadow Warrior is the type of game where it has a cult following but the following it has isn't quite enough to get more 'Mainstream' attention in another game in the series. It's been too long to really do much with the SW IP, the only reason Duke's name survived was partly because of the wave of smaller games like Manhattan Project and Time to Kill, and mostly because of how much of a joke DNF became over time as well as the occasional information leaks that happened.

Duke Nukem survived because Duke Nukem 3d was a breakthrough hit.

Would Duke Nukem have had such an impact on the world (or at least been as big and memorable as it was) if it had no map editor and mod tools?

Hell no. Providing the editor was one of the greatest decisions in the history of all PC gaming, IMVHO.

What mod tools Duke Nukem 3d had?

Well, the ability to edit con code and add art files and all that stuff.

I believe the term is "all of them".

I mean they weren't really mod tools per se.

Weren't they?

BUILD.EXE - map editing tool
EDITART.EXE - art editing tool
TRANSPAL.EXE - palette tool
WAD2ART.EXE - DOOM -> BUILD art conversion tool
WAD2MAP.EXE - DOOM -> BUILD map conversion tool
KEXTRACT.EXE - BUILD GRP file extraction tool
KGROUP.EXE - BUILD GRP file creation tool

All on the original 1.3D CD. I would go on, but you already look stupid enough for trying to say Duke Nukem 3D didn't have mod tools.

Does a precedent even exist to allow scriptable customization of a PC game in the way that the CON files did for Duke 3D? I'm betting things like the Amiga and C64 had capabilities in the general territory but that is one section of gaming history I do not know too well.
