THE inspiration for Duke Nukem (even down to the pink top and name from film title)
#1 Posted 04 September 2010 - 09:04 AM
His acting name is Brick Bronsky and his real name is Jeffrey Beltzner
Get this guy to play Duke now (in the film not at home on his Xbox).

I know that Duke seems to be getting younger with each sequel for some stupid unknown reasons but I can assure you that the actor in that movie doesn't!
You do realize that he's probably old as shit and not that buff anymore right?

Other then that? No. He has a tank top, but he doesnt have any of the charisma or attitude of Duke.
#5 Posted 05 September 2010 - 11:40 AM
And wow, that's totally Duke.

I see the connection with the tank top and how Duke used to have a pink tank top and the babes and what not but yeah I think you are right. He doesn't even shoot any mutants or anything. But who's to say they didn't get some inspiration from there? They where inspired by many things.

Last Action Hero
No tank top but a red shirt, jeans and a belt with a belt buckle. Not to mention an over the top action hero with references\parody's to other action movies.
Check out his action figure:
I used to have an action figure of him but it looked closer to Arnold than the one above... and was still very Duke'ish.

yea and duke even owned him with one of his epic lines

I mean just look at him!
He doesn't joke he never smiles he never talks, he just scores fatalities!
Sure we like Duke for being a human and honestly he would be a great guy to go against the Terminator and kill him.
If Sarah Conor could kill the terminator, Duke would definitely be able to do it so I think we all agree that Duke is much more efficient than a T-800 but I still think Arnold looks more bad ass in T2 than Duke lol!

Arnold played different styles of bad ass and I agree that in Commando he is a big muscly bad ass that shows his strength and his muscles all the time but in terminator he is not about muscles, he is about being a cold bad ass mother fucker.
He is always dressed in dark leather wearing sunglasses and being an implied bad ass driving a cool Harley.
He doesn't need to show his muscles in T2 to understand how big of a killer he is.
In Commando he looks more like Duke Nukem
I mean look at these pic, it's so Duke Nukemish
I can't believe how much these 2 pics look alike after I edited the one on the right
But it all boils to the style of his character.
In commando he is a meathead like Duke is, while in T2 he is an intelligent strategic death machine.

Let's be honest now. It's so obvious that in the first 2 Duke Nukem games, they've decided how the character will look in probably 10 mins.
The old duke has nothing in common with duke3d. He didn't wear glasses, his face was ugly as hell, he had freaking pink on him lol.
I remember playing those Duke Nukem games when I was a kid and I really enjoyed them somehow but when Duke Nukem 3d came out, it had nothing in common with them.

It was all about the limitations at the time. They always intended to have Duke wearing red in the first game, but never ended up getting the colors right. There are even some left over sprites of a Duke sprite that people seem to think is supposed to be black. He's not, just a different skin color with a red shirt.
They really need to remake the first two games for Xbox Live and PC as a budget release.

Trust me, if they ever remake them with HD sprites or 3d side scrolling graphics, the games will most likely got on psn and xboxlive.
They never release such remakes on pc, I noticed it's a common habit for all developers.

Especially Duke Nukem 1, less so Duke Nukum 2, the Duke character is less evolved and certainly is not exactly like Duke3D. That said, who is to say that the Last Action Hero wasn't reciprocating the inspiration and basing Arnold's character on Duke who was based on Arnold....whoa.

I'd go further, stating he may even have died of a heart attack, due to steroid abuse in his younger 'roid-raging days. Happens to a lot of those guys. Heart bypasses and such. Lulz.

Yes I forgot to mention this but have thought of it.. the hard rock and explosions. Not to mention there was a scene in LAH with babes both after an action scene and when Arnold and sidekick went to the video store. They are also both fond of one liners and similar weaponry. But like I said 3D Realms took\stole inspiration from quite a few sources and this is just one of them. Duke is sort of like a mash-up of Jack Slater, Ash and Rowdy Roddy Piper (he coined the term kick ass and chew bubble gum in the movie "They Live"). Rowdy Roddy Piper sported the shades that let him identify aliens as well.
The big difference between Jack Slater (the character in LAH) and Duke is Jack's a cop and Duke is just a bad ass who helps out sometimes. In fact does he even have an official job title? What organization is he a member of?
One last thing LAH was a self parody of Arnold (he even makes fun of his "I'll be back" line) and action movies in general and Duke3D is a parody of action heroes and movies so IMHO they have quite a bit in common.

Near as I can tell, Duke is like some sort of mercenary. He's paid specifically to "kick ass." When hes not saving the world, hes appearing in movies (Dead Hard, Lunar Apocalypse) and video games, and running his casino and so forth. And of course, Duke Burger.

The rest of him comes from Arnold, Sly, Eastwood, Roddy Piper, and John Wayne.
