Moving on - DNF mod project

I have been creating my own Duke Forever style game screenshots for a while now, because more than anything I wanted to play an FPS that felt and played how I though the 98' and 2001 trailers would.

I know mod projects have been closed before, and I also know that we could never try to use the Duke IP and the "Forever" name without the legal entity that is 3DR stepping in. If anything I want to make a thread over here for our Duke Nukem screenshot look - alikes.

My idea is that this Summer I will make a hoover dam map in the unreal editor and add some aliens and a golden desert eagle, and play it as if it is what I have been missing.

These are from Cs 1.5

TF2 Hoover Dam

This one is a full map modded from an old hl2 one, made with the Tf2 art style and almost completed. I abandoned the project and will begin working on the map again tonight.

My ultimate goal is to make a map of the Las Vegas strip, that is free roamable and full of aliens, and I would love it if other people would not take the closure of 3d Realms so hard and instead focus some of their bad energy into something fun and productive. I hope for a news post WID but in the mean time if we put some effort, there could be a playable level in the next day.

Doesn't really look that special. Without some of the HRP stuff I wouldn't even know it had anything to do with Duke.

Also, too soon, man!

Well, I have some remakes of Hollywood Holocaust but for some reason the imageshack screens of those got deleted. I want to put the idea out there more than anything else.

Of course, but perhaps you could wait until the corpse of 3DR/DNF has decomposed a bit more. Right now it just looks like you're dancing on the grave.

Well, it's dead. I have waited 12 years I can dance on it.

Then you have no place here, really. We don't dance on anyones graves that for sure. 3D Realms as a company still exists, and they own trademarks, IPs and all that - you can't proceed with your work. At least, don't bring it to the public.

Excuse me for trying to do something fun then, even though I already said it would not bear the name Duke Nukem. Problem Solved.

Aw come on, guys. The shots looked nice. Would have liked to have seen the Hollywood Holocaust inspired ones.

Well, I can see some potential, if this would be modeled mostly after the 2001 E3 trailer, it would end up being a fun mod to play.

I dunno. Honestly, half the stuff in the 2001 trailer looked pretty boring to play. I think the style of the trailer was the really good part.

I'll help out in a mod of sorts, sure. Depending on what it's made on, source engine or what have you.

In all honesty though, I think a project dedicated to Duke and 3DRealms would be better if it had Duke Nukem, a Pig monster as an enemy in some form, and the rest of it as original content, that way we aren't just stealing ideas and are continuing the Duke "lore" in non-canon stuff, rather than remake everything.

Floodge: if you want to do a DNF mod and be able to release it despite using Duke Nukem, why don't you do it as a Duke3D mod? Especially with the Polymer engine, that looks sweet... (EDIT: just make sure that it still looks okay with the "regular" Polymost engine, so even those who can't afford to upgrade their computer yet, like me, will still be able to enjoy it)
I'm sure nobody will tell you to stop making a Duke3D mod where the main character is Duke. And you could just call it DNF (not Duke Nukem Forever, literally DNF), so nobody can complain.

Yeah, a DNF based Duke 3D mod could be really sweet.

I apologize, I was bit hasty on my judgement, should have read the whole post. Depending on what direction this will take.

I can try and help out any which way I can

I haven't messed with a Duke3D editor, but I can get acquainted with level editors fairly quickly.

No Duke3D/Duke content released in other engines unless you want your thread removed.

If you want to create a DNF Vegas themed level set for Duke3D get in touch with DeeperThought who made DukePlus. He has plenty of effects and weapons to work with and it's HRP compatible. He's already asked other people for participation in a possible tribute level set and could use the help.

Hop on over to the Duke Mod forum and post in the Duke Plus thread.

i don't know. i know it's not legal but i would be on the train to make a dukegame on a modern engine - i'm really done with duke3d..this engine has it's limits and those limits are (with the new renderer) reached.
don't get me wrong - i think it's great what's going on with the whole duke3d thing, but it's a nonesenser to push this 13 years old engine to a dx10shader point, only because it's not legal to do it in a different engine.

Therefore unless anyone got permission from george or scott (which is ngh) for a new dukegame/dukemod - i rather stay away and accept the fact that dukenukem forever is "on hold".

hey guys, it's me again. i would really like to have a duke-style game out there with modern tech where we could frag eachother (because i'm getting tired of shooting crap) - and since it IS a copyright issue and since we obviously are not george and his team, we are not able/not allowed to do that.

so here's the deal: we start a mod inspired by... THEY LIVE. if you haven't seen the movie, watch it - the character is very similar to duke nukem.

Yes, there are no pigcops but the aliens are there at least - or we could create our own superhero :P

Yes and i see some questions rising...

- Tech: could be Unreal3, which is straightforward and well known and the closest we can get to DNF
- First goal: would be to create a dm map
- what weapons? suggestions?

well we all have put a lot of work on the 3dr forums suggesting ideas for weapons and interactivity and 1000000 other things in the lst years, so why not use it instead of waste them?

with me we are already 4 people - 3 of them work as gamedevelopers - so i think that's not a bad start after all. if setup correctly with proper gamedesign, this could be really an interesting project.

so what do you think? does this idea totally suck or is there maybe some potential hidden in the corner?

Why not just have a completely original universe instead of using something else?

Have the main character someone that looks exactly like Duke, but has a few key differences and a different name.

Call the enemies Hogcops and whatnot.

They might be the same, but they're not the exact same.

Someone pitched this same idea to me when it came to DukeHL, and my response was nearly the exact same.

We dont want a water downed carbon copy. We want DUKE. Thats the freaking point of wanting to do a Duke Nukem mod. You want DUKE NUKEM, not KARL KICKSEM or some stupid clone, rip off. If someone wanted to do a "Very close but not quite" Duke mod, thats what they would set out to do in the first place. With Duke its ALL or NOTHING.

Either way, its a bad idea to try and do something like this. The best bet is to do a total conversion, hell, even a standalone Duke3d mod (and yes, that is VERY doable)
