Daikatana Dm

Alright so John Romero had released Daikatana Deathmatch a while ago, I know this topic is a late, but still I had downloaded the game back when it was released and it's the multiplayer of Daikatana and honestly, don't kill me, I enjoy Daikatana multiplayer over Quake 3 Arena.

See here's the thing, Daikatana DM has much more level design in it, from Gibbler on the Roof to Acropolis, to the Dojo, and more. All the levels are big, have tons of environment in them, and are much more complex than the basic Quake 3 levels.
Also Romero had tons of ground breaking weapons at the time, which went unrecognized by the gaming community. The Shockwave was bad ass, the Eye of Zeus, Nhirranas staff (I believe that's what it was called) the Kineticore , the Sidewinder, and a lot more. All the weapons were imaginative, and fun to use.
Online the game could get intense, it wasn’t as graphically as impressive as Quake 3 during the time, but Daikatana had much more gameplay elements that made it a better experience IMO.

I'm not calling Quake 3 a bad game, but it was to basic and I got tired of playing it a fter a week or two. But Daikatana DM is something I'd highly suggest if your looking for an retro sort of multiplayer experience.

So, there's a free multiplayer version of Daikatana leying somwhere around the internet..?
If so, i might get it, i never tried the real thing back in the days, but i guess it's worth a try for multiplayers sake... And just to see what it is like...

Besides, i like Q3A, if this is better in a sense, i should really look at it...

There are many things about Daikatana that I enjoy very much... the weapons, the soundtrack and generally the atmosphere of the levels.
Deathmatch was a lot of fun, but I've never heard of a free multiplayer version. I only know that Ion Storm released a free MP map pack back then.

Daikatana is a good game, and can be fun.

But what killed it was the hype, constant delays and the team mates.

If Ion Storm and Eidos had downplayed the hype machine a bit, maybe not set so many false release dates... it would have been welcomed a little better.
But due to a crappy add campaign and an overabundance of adds... people were almost destined to hate it.

Then throw in the rather bland starting levels... and yeah it's hard to stick with it. Add in an extremely annoying sidekick (who's always in the way or getting themselves killed) and it gets worse.

But later levels, mostly past episode 1, are great. Full of atmosphere and filled with detail. The enemies are original and cool to fight with interesting weapons.

I never played Daikatana online (As I don't do MP) but I've heard lots of good things about it.

Daikatana actually has a rather large cult following, it's just to many gamers instantly go along with reviews and instantly think it sucks without giving it a chance.

Daikatana wasn't particularly bad but it didn't do much for the genre, I can't believe it was released the same year as Deus Ex and No One Lives Forever though. I think releasing the DM portion of the game for free was a great decision, shame I don't think too many picked up on the opportunity to check it out.

Sounds familiar. :)

I'm kind of bumping an old thread here but I had no idea there was a DM Daikatana for download - I played Daikatana with my brother a few years back and I enjoyed it quite alot. Even if you don't like Daikatana (I think it's a pretty cool game) you might enjoy it in Deathmatch so give it a go :P

Like others, I didn't know a DM version existed. A bit surprising since I check Romero's website every now and then and you'd expect him to advertise it a bit more.

But anyways, I take it there are no servers?

All that hype didn't kill it. The fact that it sucked compared to all the other shooters that had been released by the time Daikatana got out killed it.

What? The enemies are absolutely pathetic. They all have just two functions: charge (which they try to do even when there's an obstacle in front of them) and shoot.

Well, I'd really like to see what that UT3 remake will be like sooner than later. Certainly looks like it'll probably be a hit of sorts.

A bit OT, but still: I've heard that Daikatana has coop multiplayer, does it?

Yes, there is an online COOP aspect.

You can see the game in its entirety played by two ridiculously funny guys with special guests every so often.
