My keeper

Hey all, I want to find out your suggestions on what to do for this problem. You see, I am getting a new computer this Augest, and that is wonderful because my computer now is even worse then the ones from 1996, and it has windows XP installed on it, so it's basicley dead. So I want to know how I should backup my files. I have NO flash drives and I can't seem to find a good site to upload like 5 GB of data. If someone could solve this problem then thank you very much! Oh, and some of those files are related to the NB(C?)BP but i have backups of those, so don't worry too much.

Since you have no flash drives, I would say the simple solution here is to buy one. You can get an 8 or 16 gig one for like 15 bucks these days, and if you can't fit that into your budget you should seriously reconsider whether or not you can afford an entire new computer either. :)

I like TX's idea, I can't burn CD's. I would get a job but you know, there are no places that will accept someone my age. But I will try to get some money and get a USB flash drive.

Can't you ask your parents or something?

Hold on, think about this; I have THE worst computer ever, when my parents rented this house we found this computer half broken in the basement. Then my parents got a very nice laptop and banned me from using it, so then I decided to open up this computer, fix it myself and got it working. My parents would never give me support on this computer and they said frequintly that my computer is dying, so now they are getting me a new computer because they don't know anything about computers, so they say that my computer is old and broken, and still I managed to get this thing working for 13 MONTHS! My parents are the type of people who don't appriciate things that I do, they are the type of people who think that viruses can travel even with an anti-virus. So Sangman, trust me. My parents would NEVER get me a USB for me as long as I have a computer that doesn't set their standereds.

Can't you transfer everything from one computer to another using a local network?
0

User is offline   Shawneth

#8

How do you do that? My mother said to me that you can store files on a wireless network, but i don't see that happening, but if i could i ant to do that transfer thing. The computer I am using now is a Windows XP service pack 2 and the other computer on the same network is a windows vista. It would be great if you could explain to me.

You can attach you old IDE(i assume) hard drive to a new computer's motherboard. There should be one IDE slot. Although, there is a small chance there won't be.

Or I don't know. Make a gmail account and attach worth of 5Gb files there.

Picking up a medium sized flash drive is an optimal solution. There is also a possibility of setting up a share but that may be slower than just using a USB drive. That is, of course, if you have a USB drive on that old POS that isn't slow.

Why did they ban you from using it??? I mean surely using that instead of buying a new one would be better.

oporix, I'm not sure I get it. Are you mad because your parents want to buy you the best PC they can afford? Because that's fucking awesome I'd say :)

Best PC?! Lol, my mother told me she was gettng me a used piece of crap when she got out of the liquor store! My parents ban me because they think I go and download viruses everytime I go on. Man, I say i'm pretty lucky that RapidShare exists. perhaps Duke Nukem is my real father, he wouldn't mind getting me a free computer.

Seems to me that parents doesn't know how to properly set up a restricted user account...

It is also possible that they download the viruses. I don't know how my parents get viruses but they do...

Also, Duke Nukem wouldn't buy you a computer, he would leave you and your mother for another stripper in a heart beat. You would never know your father.

It's fairly easy. For one, porn sites are a good place to search. Even without them, there are lots of places with viruses.

I made parent's user account restricted(=non-admin). Can't say that I ever went to them because "their computer was not working". They pretty much can't harm the system. And their guests(whose include stupid children/teens) can't either.

I'm now working on Win7 at home. So far is pretty awesome ride with a user account. Whenever I need to install something or change some system settings I need just type the pass and voila. Saves on having antivirus or whatever.

Unfortunately I use software that's completely incompatible with UAC, so I have to run in admin mode all the time or else my keyboard and mouse stop working every time a UAC related dialog comes up. I guess Windows blocks applications that control the keyboard and mouse when UAC is doing something now, or when you're running as a user and a window with administrator access is open. This is pretty incompatible with the fact that my Windows machine only receives keyboard and mouse events over the network, not via a device physically attached to it.

Oh well, I've still never gotten viruses anytime even remotely close to recently. The last time I remember having an actual infection was in the 90s using Windows 98 when I got CIH from something I got from a warez channel on DALnet. Though, there was a time when a friend brought an infected machine to a LAN I was having that ended up infecting a bunch of .exes stored on a Samba share on my server. Was kind of amusing.

lol, that's what it was like when I was at home, school and college.
Edit; Actually, people still don't think I know what I'm on about. Personally I think a pile of certificates, god knows how many machines built by me and the network I once set up to support over 1000 users says differently, but I could be wrong.

I remember when I was about 11 I had a domain set up on my server (a Ti-386 with about 2Mb of RAM and CGA) running LANTastic, I remember when my mother was in the bath once I went and put her computer on the domain and modified msgina.dll so she couldn't log on locally, I put every restriction I could on that and blacklisted a lot of websites, she never did really figure out what was going on and I had no intention of ever removing that.

The worst thing is trying to explain to your parents that the stupid Norton Anti-virus that eMachines give you is shit and does not work once expired unless you buy it or put something decent on there (ClamWin) or when you try to tell them that the Windows error reports are useless, or to not ring tech support and allow yourself to fix it for them. bloody technophobes, I hate them.

Sorry for my rant, I will stop typing now, there's a horrible cheese-like taste in my mouth and someone has just made me a nice cake that I must eat right now.

If anything, just connect the old hard drive as secondary. If you're old enough to drive yourself to a store, just buy a 16gig flash drive.

This is an attitude that needs to die. Yes there are stupid porn sites with viruses out there but there are A LOT of high quality sites and pages there with no viruses at all that offer only grade-A porn material. I browse porn quite frequently and I never catch viruses.

I'd actually wager, you're more likely to catch a virus looking on those vague serial keys and cracks sites than on some random porn site.

Wait so.. you're saying you don't need an antivirus when you have the UAC? :)

You can go without antivirus and never get a virus while using the Internet. I have seen it.

The Windows admin thing prevents changes from being made on the computer so if a trojan tries to edit the startup scripts or something like that, it gets stopped, usually.

Don't confuse UAC and restricted user account. I use restricted user account(which means I don't belong to Administrators group) as my main account. Then I use UAC just to run application from another user's account(Administrator). It's pretty much like the old "run as..." routine. I'm not elevating my user's rights, I'm running the application from a different user. My account can't hurt the system. And while browsing internet I surely don't need antivirus.

Yeah, I should have mentioned warez also.

If you always visit the same few sites then sure, but once you go explore the vast unknown plains of cyberspace it would be most unwise to do this without any protection.

Lotan: aight, that clears things up.. Unfortunately, ever since XP I have the bad habit of constantly logging on as admin. On Windows 7 this is not really necessary at all but oh well.

If bey "exploring" you mean porn and warez, sure...
I haven't even had a warning about a virus in years. I imagine that if I never installed AVG I wouldn't even notice and I would not ever get a virus (and I do explore the internet at times).

It isn't where you go so much as what you click. Downloading anything is a risk but if you know what you are downloading and you know it is safe, then you never need antivirus. Basically, like most things in life, if you are (appropriately) careful, you won't get hurt.

Screw viruses, there just ways to piss you off, the only site I go on is Duke Nukem sites and perhaps trusted sites. Also Duke Nukem would not ditch my mother and I, for no matter reason, he has no proven evidence that he had sex, sure he can pay strippers but he reminds me of Lo Wang, always sweet-talking girls and then gets shot by there UZI.

You must be 13 or something. Duke Nukem isn't a ball and chain kind of guy. Although the majority of "story" for Duke Nukem is in DNF (allegedly) the general consensus is that he is a loner and a one night stand kind of guy.

Still, the reason for this topic has been exhausted I think.

Doesn't it you don't have one. Malware can be really silent. Many of them don't want to be detected.

There is also flash drives. On default, Windows "start" them. Which means it can run some kind of autorun program if it exists on the flash drive. I've seen lots of PCs and flash drives being infected with "autorun" malware. It wasn't really harmful much, though. Of course under restricted user it couldn't do shit.

Oh damn, I forgot about the end of Duke Nukem 3D... But anyways, it doesn' matter, Because no matter what situation he is in, I CONTROL HIM. Decides, in Duke Nukum and Duke Nukem 2, he is a a side scrolling charachter, not a hot-shot. Also, I could never get why any girl would go out with a guy with his kind of hair, like god. I hope to god that wasn't the style in 1996!
