Duke's Back! "Let's just get it done"
#1 Posted 24 December 2009 - 01:22 PM
After I saw the pic of Dukes back on the duke4.net page (yes I know it is a rip-off of another model), I figured "Why the hell not make it".
-
Built by the Duke community
Built with the newly released Unreal Dev Kit
Tested by us the die hard fans of Duke
Packed and set for release.
-
Yes, 3dr owns duke rights and T2 owns distro rights, but f$%^^^ 'it!
Call it an interum game, a brand reboot, a game, saver, whatever...something to keep Duke alive and pressure 3DR to finish DNF.
-
The only way DNF will ever get made is if 3DR has the funds to pay its programming team. That is the heart of what happened with DNF/3DR/T2.
-
We (the Duke community) create a non-DNF game;
WE make sure it works;
WE deliver it to T2 for distro/sale.
WE would have to give all royalties to 3DR but this is where the fun begins. ALL FUNDS must be ear-marked for development of DNF. No playing cards/slots at the casino/xbox live purchases/etc...(yes that means you GB)
WE insist that DNF must be completed in 'gold disk' format for T2 to distro 1 year after we deliver 'Duke's Back' to T2 on 3DR's behalf.
WE insist that GB (yes him again) is removed from working with the dev team, a new manager is hired (and paid by T2) to make sure that DNF is finished on time. All GB needs to do is sit back, be quiet and wait for his royalty checks to arrive.
-
I have several rough outlines already created for the game done.
Some basic maps/items/textures ready to insert, but to be honest by Unreal editing skills are brutal, but at least I am trying.
Oh yea to keep 3DR happy with 'ownership rights' everyone involved must agree to not release any portion of the game, leave that to T2. We would however want T2 to allow us to post as many screen shots/video clips as we feel like to help with promoting the game.
-
If you think this is a bad idea, go here:
http://www.duke4.net....php?extend.257
and imagine it as the front of a retail game box, then think - can I help make it a reality?
-
I am happy to continue this thread - if there is interest, if not I will just continue plugging away with it on my own.

It won't happen.

By all means continue modding but don't shoot too high.

Honestly though. I'm probably not the best person at this stuff on the forum, but I atleast got quite some knowledge in building maps in iDTech 3 and 4, concept art and unless it's too advanced I'm good at making textures.
And you know what? I'm actually going through education now to become a 3D model designer. Sure, this might not be that cool, but it's still a start. And I bet that alot of the folks here got some experience in modding, and that's also a good start.

I forgot to mention that Design (as in Art Design and Art Directing) is what I actually aim at becoming professionally one day, so I put alot of spirit into things like that. Also, if needed I can always helo with story, written alot throughout my years so I might be helpful there.
I suggest we let everyone post in this thread about what they can do and then we decide if we actually can make something.

It's not my intention to troll this thread, but you guys are hyping yourselves up with big words and are heading towards a massive trainwreck. I've worked on mods with a similar mentality and they all ended badly, and that was with an engine I was comfortable with. If you desperately want to go on with this then you won't hear from me again, but I advice against it. Save yourself the trouble. This is NOT going to work.

Very true but hey, we all know many people don't listen to any advice, they just want to experience it first-hand.

Fun thing about delivering. What did you deliver? As far as I've seen you post you pretty much state the business gets ideas from your forum posts but I've never seen you provide any actual evidence of that. (I don't know why I ask, I'll probably get some cryptic post as a reply like "the answer has been before you all the time, pay more attention")
Apart from that I'm not exactly sure why I need to deliver, I'm not a part of this project. It's not my job to "deliver" about something I'm not involved with.
What's with this whole focus on "delivering" anyway? Modding is about having some good fun, but I don't think any fun can be had in trying to get an unrealistic project going.. Notice that the people who seemingly might be on board with this have not made a single user map or anything as far as I know. Yet you want to go straight to making a game that will catch 2K's eye?

Many say f'it we are bound to fail
Some say the idea has merit
Some say they have some of the skills a project like this needs.
-
Strange though, it seems very few really read my post correctly.
Developed using unreal editor - I might not be great at game building but holy mother f!, I bet I can get something out the door in less than 12 years.
-
So here is the deal, I'll try and post regular updates on my progress, if I get stuck on something I will ask for help. Please if you don't agree with this project stfu and let us work on what we can. If you can help - bonus!!!
-
Just cleaning up after xmas and putting in a few shifts at work before the new year, I should have an outline for the first few levels ready to post very soon.
-
To the supporters - thanks
to those who put this project down - with luck see you when we publish!

Oh, and that also kicks up transfer issues I forgot to mention in my last post on content licensing. The rights need to be transferable so ownership of the license can be moved from an individual to a company.
Both Epic's license and asset license management can benefit from the whole project being wrapped in a company from the start. It can be put off if the license terms accommodate it. This is a PITA but something to look into.
Strange still - did we skip the provide the game to T2 and 3DR once complete for sale.
I believe both already have licensing with unreal in place and the legal teams needed to sort out any issues in the content/delivery/etc... Our job is to just get the game done. T2 will not turn down a duke game, they need $$$ badly. 3DR already purchased the unreal dev system when they started DNF and most likely already have a deal in place with unreal for royalties - we dont need one because WE will not be the ones selling it.

3DR are not a charity nor do they need your money. They're a business solely focused on surviving as a business and have better funded, more capable, and higher quality projects going right now. Unless you have something special you're not even in the running, and by taking an inflexible and unclear position at the start you're shooting yourself in the back.
Forget 3D Realms. Forget what some random mouth says. Ask yourself what's important. Ask yourself what's important for you. Lastly, ask yourself what's important for gaming. You either want to do something notable and be a success that blazes a trail for everyone else, or be some no-name failure who implodes before he gets started. Do it my way, or don't do it.
1 - take a chill pill dude!
2 - 3DR and T2 like any company will not turn down a free project developed and dropped into their laps to make $ off of.
3 - Personally I couldn't give a rats a@@ what your thoughts are anymore, thanks for the 'you are doomed from the start'
4 - you have no idea how much $$$ I have and ready to devote to this project
5 - I am not inflexible, if anyone anywhere proposes changes to this project that make it better - I am all for it.
6 - if 3DR-T2-anyone with an ounce of legal interest in the Duke IP has reservations about this project, by all means - get in touch with me.
7 - with people like Cultureshock in this bb it is no wonder there is such a negative attitude towards DNF/3DR/T2/GB/etc...
8 - those that have expressed interest - cool you will get updates, CS - in Duke immortal words - Eat S and D.

Exactly the problem, the time of solitary bedroom programmers making high-profile titles is behind us now. Not saying "DON'T PROGRAM WITHOUT A TEAM ANYMORE" but this is just too high a goal for the first thing you've ever done. Make some mods first at least.

The idea to make a game from community for community is a good one,but don't say that we will give a game to take 2 or any other publisher.
Excuse me,but that's stupid.
We can't just make a game out alone without Broussard's lisence and take it to a publisher to publish it officially.
It's illegal.
If we ever going to create a game,it will be with no financial profit, because simply we can't get financial profit out of it.
We will get busted.
What we can do,is create a game and give it as a freeware,or present it to George Brussard, and ASK HIM his lisence before we can give it somewhere.
Even if he doesn't work for a minute in this project,he can sue us if we would try to make money out of his rights without even asking him.
So,I think you should edit your post.
But I think it's a nice idea to create a game by funs for funs..
And I would help

Yes and yes and yes.
We create the game, present it to T2 for publishing (they have distro rights), 3DR (George) has ownership rights he gets all the royalty $$$, we get none. This is to build dev $$$ to get DNF back on track and published. Who knows if we do a good job maybe 3DR will ask us to help with DNF. If GB has a prob with it going to T2, fine, we send it to him also.

The general storyline for the first episode is 80% done.

Should have ready to upload soon

Question? Would it really be so bad if I skipped adding the typically 'space station' levels?
