3D Realms reviving Earth No More

3D Realms is reviving Earth No More through Gambitious, a hybrid crowdfunding platform dedicated specifically to the games industry that offers crowdfunding through both donations and equity-based funding that's set for full launch on August 15th. It's also worth noting that Scott Miller is one of the five members of the Gambitious advisory board.

Earth No More (3D Realms)

Mankind’s relentless destruction of Earth awakens a biological response from deep within the planet’s crust that threatens an environmental apocalypse.

Scott Miller - Founder Apogee/3D Realms (Duke Nukem, Max Payne, Prey Franchises)

Scott Miller is a gaming pioneer who's still going strong. He practically invented episodic gaming, online distribution, and was a leader in independent studios developing their own mega-brands back in the early 90's and to this day. His company, 3D Realms, released the world's first 3D shooter (Wolfenstein 3D, 1992), and is known for other mega-hits such as Duke Nukem, Max Payne, Shadow Warrior, and Prey (all still ongoing franchises). Scott is a creative leader, and now focuses on creating transmedia properties that involve a rich storyverse that can be exploited in not only games, but films, comics, merchandising, and other media. As such, he's currently involved in numerous fresh properties in both games and films, including bringing Duke Nukem himself to the big screen.

"Having worked with Mike and Harry going back to GodGames in the later 90's, with their passion and track-record for indie development, I can't name two people better capable of leading a new charge into equity-based crowd funding for independent game development. Why just donate to projects, when you can become an owner? The game industry just got a lot more interesting."

Holy cunt-brushing sh*t.

Now that's what I like to see. Way to go Scott.

Hopefully this time they won't f*ck it up too much.

Oh man, that's cool news! I'll keep an eye out come August for some updates. Sounded like a really cool idea, wasn't sure what it's fate would be after mid 2009. Recoil have moved on, I wonder who'll pick up the development duties. Wish Scott and George all the best. They always have a unique take on action games. Cheers for the update Green!

The problem could be in actually gathering enough funds.

All depends on the budget they need and who can endorse it for them.
Just a few key names in the industry is what it needs.

I saw some of the footage from the old demo reel and i gotta say is it me or does it seem like something in similar in playstyle to xcom?
Thats the vibe i got.

Also on another note but OMIGOD THAT LAST QUOTE ON MILLERS DESCRIPTION

No likely since it was supposed to be first person shooter. And where did you saw demo reel? I doubt there was anything released about this game except concept art.

Yeah, no. He's been involved with numerous project for ages, Duke Nukem movie included. Radar Group was announced 5 years ago, yet nothing came of it except Max Payne movie, with which they weren't directly involved anyway.

"The Max Payne movie came out last October, so that approach did pay off for us, and there is a Duke Nukem movie in pre-production right now."(q) Scott Miller.

Last we heard on the Duke Movie up to this point was back in 2010 when Scott Faye was writing a script (an original story) and trying to get it sold to a studio.

Pre-production tends to be a very long and nebulous region for projects like this. Last time the "pre-production" for Duke's flick lasted from 1999 to 2003 before it was all shut down.

Looking forward to this for sure, wondering what genre of game it will be though.

Do they have a staff at all? I now want to wander over to their site to see if anything official has been said.

AFAIK it is just George, Scott and Bryan Turner. But that doesn't matter since they work exclusively with external dev studios(and contractors in the case of stuff like the Manhattan Project XBLA port). This is something Scott thinks they should have done a long time ago:

"Even so, I think I would have abandoned internal development six or seven years ago. I much prefer to work with external studios to develop games, as we did with Max Payne and Prey."

Edit:

By the way the full Depth Entertainment sizzle reel where the ENM footage from the OP is found is here.

Edit2:

For those wondering what the heck Machine Phase is check out this link. Radar/Depth probably were(are?) adapting it to a movie and/or game or something. Incarnate is this project, it was mentioned in the original IGN interview about Radar Group:

Quote

IGN: What can you tell us about Incarnate?

Miller: This project demonstrates exactly why Radar is unique. We have teamed up with Frank Hannah, who wrote the movie, The Cooler. So, the concept came from Hollywood, so to speak, through Depth Entertainment. This is one of the ultra-rare linear concepts that had strong potential also as a game property, so that's where Radar is taking it, while Depth is working a film deal for the property. It's important to note that we do not care about simultaneous film and game releases. That just leads to disaster, as one must be compromised to make the date of the other. Not only must each release stand on its own, but each much not cover the same territory as the other. Our goal is that the film and a game taken from the same storyverse tell a different slice of story, and compliment each other, rather than repeat each other. I think the most successful Star Wars games, for example, tell entirely unique stories versus the film stories.

The tagline for Incarnate is 'Evil never dies." That's about all I can reveal on this still early project.

Also mentioned in Scott Faye's linkedin profile. Alice is obviously shown due to the American Mcgee's Alice movie. The only reference I could find to something called "Dead of Night" was this and this.

Edit3:

As far as this funding drive for Earth No More goes, 3DR/Radar already spent quite a bit of money on it:

Quote

We go on to hear from Samuli Syvähuoko, the founder of Recoil and one of the original founders of Remedy. He details a tale of woe about Recoil being created in 2007 as Finland’s next great triple-A developer, taking €4.5 million in investment and putting together a demo for Earth No More, a high-end, post-apocalyptic FPS. While the team was pitching, the world’s finances went pop.

“We’d already spent all of our money,” says Syvähuoko. “Nobody was looking for a new IP. Nobody was taking any risks.”

He says Finns were “still delusional” about the games publishing model in 2007. “Tough shit. But it was fun while it lasted. I have spent so much investor money,” he says.
(Emphasis mine).

That is the equivalent of roughly 5.5 - 6 Million USD. It is alot of money to spend but not enough to complete a AAA game. It will be interesting to see how much they will try to raise through Gambitious.

I really do hope this turns out to be a success and we can see something happen with the 3DR name again. You can say a lot of things about George, but at the end of the day the heads at 3DR helped brain-child some of the best games out there along with new up-and-coming talents.

I'll be very surprised if the Duke thing actually ever happens.

ENM is a total wild card, though. It could go either way.

lol I had no idea Earth no More was a name when I read the thread title quickly, so I was partly expecting a philosophical discussion about how 3D Realms are the saviors of the planet and are going to stop keeping us alive.

As I think about it, I remember Earth No More being announced ages ago and then just falling off the face of the earth.
As a publisher/creative director, 3DR has done some pretty good things. Making the older style games was cheap and could be done but they need to focus on what they are good at: coming up with good ideas.

Yeah, I hope they get back on track with this. 3DR/George and Scott has IMO been involved with a majority of the really good 3D shooters ever made. If the genre is not going to completely stagnate and die then new ideas are needed, and if there's and direction where I have hope to be getting them it's from 3DR.

Ideas are nothing without realisation.

Well it is not just about ideas, 3DR and Radar have also had a huge hand in realizing ideas. By various means, providing funding, QA, co-writing stories etc. Like I said earlier they already spent the rough equivalent of about 6 Million USD in the case of ENM. The writer for the game was an employee of Radar Group for example.

Miller especially has a hand in pretty much establishing the FPS genre

Right now, Radar haven't released even one game since being established in 2008. There's nothing to talk about except general ideas they have on game development.

Just keep George Brussard far away from this project and it could turn out well.

So they're copying Kickstarter now? :(

I remember they tried copying Steam...

#23

Burnett, Who is they? Game XStream/Triton was not done by either 3DR or Radar Group and it was not a mere clone of Steam. I love Steam but as someone who actually tried Triton I can tell you it had a number of interesting innovations.

Sang, Gambitious has a couple of differences from Kickstarter. Kickstarter is exclusively donations based, they explicitly BAN giving backers any share in revenue or profits. Gambitious on the other hand allows both donations and actual investments. Gambitious is also exclusively for video games, unlike Kickstarter which has theater plays, books, board games and what not. Just to name two of the most crucial differences.

I know. But 3dRealms/Miller tried forcing it like a better Steam substitute and all the other PR stuff. He likes to talk without much to show for it sadly. And Triton failed.

It doesn't matter, the general idea is in copying Kickstarter. And there are lots of other donation services. Not that Gambition might not be good, but it's nothing to be excited about right now.

There are plenty of other companies who do realisation, not many others who actually bring ideas to the table.

Since when do you think other companies don't bring ideas? They do that in pre-development and in development. 3dRealms wasn't some kind of company that generated ideas and then sat doing nothing(perhaps they are now). They just had money and connections so that their ideas could to be realised.

I can have lots of ideas but don't anything about them. Everyone could.

So... they have no development team, all they do is come up with ideas and hand them to developers? Its kinda like the people who make idea threads on duke4.net then right?

Pretty much. And 3drealms forums also had a clause that said all ideas on forums belong to 3dr. )

Without money, though, no one needs 3dRealms ideas because everyone could come up with something.
